Important Tips for Software Trainees by SHRI

Dear Fresh Talent,

I welcome you to the world of Software Development!
Everyone knows that we have to struggle a lot to get a good chance to work in a good company on some presentable projects in our early career. Once you get a chance to start your career as Fresher or Trainee in any organization, you shall be fortunate enough and must understand the value of this chance you have got and shall work harder in a planned way to get maximum gain out of this and you should always be committed and loyal to company to contribute to its growth. That is how it is called a “Grow-Together” OR “Give and Take” Relationship.

Further to help you in your career, I thought to share some of my tips with you and I am sure that you would give it a due consideration and make yourself reminded about this every other day.

Please pay attention to some of these tips mentioned below:

  • Get familiar with company policies, company overview and organization culture. Develop feeling of ownership and feeling of belonging always think of this chance that you have got to start your career as the turning point along with the actual purpose of the training and its mutual benefits. What you can return to your company in turn.
  • Highlight yourself not only as a good coder but as a good employee who possess faithfulness, discipline, positive attitude and respect to seniors equally to your own work as well.
  • Read & always follow the Coding & Testing Guidelines along with existing projects architecture.
  • Train yourself as an independent coder who believes in finding solutions rather on hand holding.
  • Quality of your work: Pay attention to the quality and speed of your work. Always ask these questions to the module you develop…

1. Is this screen properly understood by a laymen user?
2. Is this presentable and looking good? GUI & Usability is more important.
3. Is this doing the functions as it is supposed to do with proper functional testing before call it completed.
4. Is this secure and inputs are properly validated?
5. Is this browser compatible?
6. Is the code meets standards and is well documented with proper naming conventions?

  • Make your own Goals: Set your own targets dividing it into phases with the target and desired outcome of each phase. For example this Training can be divided in 2 parts:

– First 2 Months : Learn the strong concepts of Web, DB, OOPS, technical skills in PHP or ASP.net, jQuery etc and start developing good code that meets the above 5 questions criteria.
– Next 2 months: Even in training period, convince your seniors to win their confidence to get deployed in Live projects as Jr. Developers and start performing well.

Further, you can set a target of next 4 months to excel in Development doing all sorts of stuff that is expected out of a developer in a technology you choose.

Further, next 4 months target can be: To learn new technologies related to your projects like API’s, Payment Gateways, W3C Validated HTML, and Expert in CSS/jQuery along with advance libraries of MVC Platform you use and excel as a good coder of 1 year of exp.

  • Never consider yourself as a trainee and always be as committed as any other responsible developer to gain maximum of this period that is going to be decisive for your career.
  • Develop a feeling of healthy competition to always be better than others and also better than your own previous performance as to keep you upfront in further evaluations.
  • Effective Time Devotion is required with punctuality to experience the maximum outcome in minimum time.
  • Always be proactive, communicate well with colleagues, discuss problems and share the solutions. Do not hesitate to discuss problems and suggestions with seniors, HR or to even Directors if it is required for any betterment in your role, other’s role or in company’s working.
    With these suggestions, I end up here with a great hope from you to become a good developer respecting the job duties, company and management to get a good respect and appreciation form management in return.
